Two Female Runners Finishing Race Together

Come Visit Savannah for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon

During the second weekend in November, runners will be heading to Savannah GA for the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon and half marathon events. This fun weekend attracts a host of athletes as well as plenty of spectators enjoying the party music atmosphere as they cheer them on along the course. Luxury vacation rentals are sure to be in high demand for this lively health and fitness event.

What is the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon?

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon is actually a series of marathons that takes place in 26 cities across the USA every year. Started in 1998, the event attracts more than 500,000 runners. The unique idea was to make running fun, so the marathons always include plenty of live music on stages lining the 26-mile route.

As well as generating a family-fun day in a party atmosphere, the event has so far raised $235 million for charity. Each event is preceded by a two-day Health and Fitness Expo, which is free to all attending.

Savannah’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Course

The scenic marathon course is carefully planned for maximum enjoyment, taking in many of Savannah’s famous landmarks and sites. The start is in groups known as a “Wave start,” and runners are corralled according to their projected finish time. This means there is continuous activity for spectators to watch.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon starts at the historic City Hall in downtown Savannah. It goes along West Bay Street, Jenks Street and Augusta Avenue. After crossing the railway lines, the route goes west along Louisville Road before heading down Magazine Avenue.

The traffic is diverted as runners go down Gwinnett Street before turning up Montgomery Street and re-entering the Historic District. The race takes in three of the shady squares in the area (Pulaski Square, Lafayette Square and Troup Square) before heading along Price Street, Oglethorpe Avenue, East Broad Street and East Henry Street to Juliette Low Park.

After passing the grand homes of Gordonston, the route continues along East Anderson Street to the finish line in Forsyth Park on Drayton Street.

Perks and Prizes for Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Runners

The prize purse is shared between the winners in 15 different age categories ranging from 12 to 14-year-olds in the half marathon to runners aged 80+ in the full marathon.

Most marathon runners participate simply for their own personal satisfaction and to meet fitness goals and target times. However, there are some extra perks for runners taking part in the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon as a token of gratitude from the organizers and the City of Savannah. Every participant gets a Brooks Technical Shirt and a gear bag which can be tagged and left with Gear Check Crew until after the race. Every runner that finishes the course within the time limit gets a Finisher’s Medal and an official Finisher’s Certificate to mark their achievement.

As well as live music along the course, there are various “Cheer Squads” appointed to keep everyone enthusiastically cheering the runners as they pass by. Support for the runners includes plenty of water stations, medical stations and a “sag wagon” to pick up flagging or injured runners and transport them to the finish line.
