Historic Site

Bonaventure Cemetery is far more than a cemetery—it’s one of Savannah’s most peaceful, beautiful, and historically significant destinations. Overlooking the Wilmington River, its winding roads, elaborate monuments, towering live oaks, and Spanish moss have made it one of the most photographed cemeteries in America.

Visitors come to Bonaventure not only to admire its remarkable sculpture and architecture but also to experience a quieter side of Savannah’s history. Whether you’re interested in local history, photography, genealogy, or simply taking a peaceful walk beneath centuries-old trees, Bonaventure offers one of the city’s most memorable experiences.

Why We Recommend It

Many first-time visitors are surprised by how peaceful and beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery feels. Rather than being somber, the property celebrates Savannah’s history through remarkable monuments, mature gardens, and breathtaking river views.

We recommend Bonaventure because it offers a slower, more reflective experience than many of Savannah’s other attractions. It’s particularly rewarding for photographers, history enthusiasts, and visitors looking to experience one of Georgia’s most iconic landscapes beyond the Historic District.

History

The property originally served as the plantation estate of Colonel John Mullryne during the 18th century before becoming Evergreen Cemetery in the mid-1800s. In 1907, the City of Savannah purchased the property and established what is now Bonaventure Cemetery.

Today the cemetery contains thousands of historic burials representing Savannah’s military leaders, artists, politicians, authors, and influential families. Its reputation grew internationally following the publication of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, introducing Bonaventure’s extraordinary beauty to millions of readers and visitors.

What We Like

Bonaventure is one of those places that rewards slowing down.

Rather than rushing between famous monuments, we encourage guests to wander the shaded roads, appreciate the craftsmanship of the historic memorials, and take in the peaceful setting overlooking the Wilmington River. Every section of the cemetery offers beautiful compositions for photographers and countless stories waiting to be discovered.

It’s also remarkably different throughout the day. Morning light creates soft, atmospheric photographs, while late afternoon often provides dramatic shadows beneath the moss-covered oaks.

Visit Early for Photography

Morning light creates beautiful conditions while offering cooler temperatures and fewer visitors.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

The cemetery covers more than 100 acres, and exploring many of its most beautiful areas requires walking.

Respect the Historic Grounds

Bonaventure remains an active cemetery. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the grounds respectfully while honoring those buried there.
