The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist is one of Savannah’s most recognizable landmarks and among the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in the United States. Its soaring twin spires, intricate stained-glass windows, and richly decorated interior make it a must-see destination for visitors exploring Savannah’s Historic District.

Whether you’re interested in history, architecture, photography, or simply seeking a quiet place for reflection, the Cathedral offers an unforgettable experience. It has welcomed worshippers and visitors for more than a century and remains one of Savannah’s most treasured historic sites.

Why We Recommend It

The Cathedral Basilica is one of the few places in Savannah that consistently leaves visitors speechless. While its exterior is impressive, it’s the interior that surprises most guests. The vaulted ceilings, colorful stained glass, detailed murals, and handcrafted woodwork create one of the most beautiful spaces in the city.

We recommend visiting early in your trip. The Cathedral provides an excellent introduction to Savannah’s history and architecture while offering a peaceful break from the busier streets of the Historic District.

History

The parish was established in 1799, making it one of the oldest Catholic congregations in Georgia. Construction of the present cathedral began in 1873, and the church was dedicated in 1876.

After a devastating fire damaged much of the building in 1898, the Cathedral underwent extensive restoration and was rebuilt with remarkable attention to detail. In 2020, Pope Francis elevated the church to the status of a Minor Basilica, recognizing its historical, architectural, and spiritual significance. Today it continues to serve as an active parish while welcoming visitors from around the world.

What We Like

The Cathedral rewards visitors who slow down and look closely. Every wall, column, ceiling, and stained-glass window reveals extraordinary craftsmanship that photographs simply can’t capture.

Even guests who aren’t particularly interested in religious history often describe the Cathedral as one of the highlights of their Savannah visit. We especially appreciate how accessible it is—just a short walk from many Historic District attractions, making it easy to include in almost any itinerary.
