Located in the heart of Savannah’s Historic District, Chippewa Square is one of the city’s most recognizable public squares. Surrounded by beautiful historic buildings, towering live oaks, and elegant landscaping, the square has become a favorite destination for visitors thanks to its rich history and its connection to the Academy Award-winning film Forrest Gump.
Whether you’re following a walking tour, exploring Savannah’s famous squares, or simply enjoying a quiet moment beneath the Spanish moss, Chippewa Square offers a perfect example of the beauty and thoughtful city planning that have made Savannah one of America’s most beloved historic destinations.
Why We Recommend It
Chippewa Square is one of those places that every visitor naturally passes through, but it’s worth slowing down to appreciate. Beyond its Hollywood fame, the square showcases everything people love about Savannah—historic monuments, beautiful oak trees, peaceful green space, and architecture surrounding every corner.
Its central location also makes it one of the easiest attractions to include while exploring nearby restaurants, museums, Broughton Street, and River Street.
History
Chippewa Square was established in 1815 as part of Savannah’s famous city plan designed by General James Oglethorpe. It was named in honor of the American victory at the Battle of Chippewa during the War of 1812.
At the center of the square stands a bronze monument honoring General James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Georgia colony. Installed in 1910, the statue remains one of Savannah’s most recognizable public monuments and serves as the focal point of one of the city’s most photographed squares.
Although many visitors know the square from Forrest Gump, the famous park bench featured in the film was a movie prop and is now displayed at the Savannah History Museum rather than in the square itself.
What We Like
Chippewa Square feels quintessentially Savannah. It’s peaceful without feeling isolated and lively without becoming crowded. The combination of mature oak trees, elegant monuments, historic homes, and surrounding churches creates one of the city’s most picturesque settings.
We also appreciate how naturally it connects to nearby attractions. Within just a few minutes’ walk, guests can visit the Cathedral Basilica, the Savannah Theatre, City Market, Broughton Street, and dozens of outstanding restaurants.
