Standing watch over the Savannah River since 1808, Old Fort Jackson is Georgia’s oldest surviving brick fort and one of the best-preserved coastal fortifications in the United States. Just minutes from Savannah’s Historic District, the fort offers visitors an opportunity to step inside early American military history while enjoying beautiful riverfront views.

From daily cannon firings and musket demonstrations to exhibits showcasing the lives of soldiers stationed here, Old Fort Jackson brings history to life in an engaging and family-friendly way. Whether you’re fascinated by military history or simply looking for a unique attraction beyond the city’s famous squares, the fort offers an experience unlike anywhere else in Savannah.

Why We Recommend It

Old Fort Jackson offers something many historic sites cannot: living history. Rather than simply reading exhibits, visitors experience live cannon demonstrations, costumed interpreters, and hands-on presentations that make Savannah’s military past feel immediate and memorable.

We especially recommend pairing a visit with Savannah Riverboat Cruises. Seeing the fort from the river before exploring it on land provides a fascinating perspective on why this strategic location protected Savannah for generations.

History

Construction of Old Fort Jackson began in 1808 to strengthen Savannah’s coastal defenses following growing concerns about foreign invasion. Positioned along the Savannah River, the fort played an important defensive role during the War of 1812 and later served Confederate forces during the Civil War.

Although military technology eventually made the fort obsolete, the structure survived while many similar coastal defenses disappeared. Today, Old Fort Jackson is preserved by the Coastal Heritage Society and remains one of Savannah’s most important historic landmarks, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore an authentic early nineteenth-century military installation.

What We Like

Old Fort Jackson feels interactive from the moment you arrive. The scheduled cannon demonstrations immediately capture visitors’ attention, while knowledgeable interpreters explain not only how the fort operated but also what daily military life looked like more than two centuries ago.

We also appreciate its location. Sitting directly on the Savannah River, the fort offers beautiful waterfront views while remaining only a short drive from the Historic District. It’s one of the easiest day trips to add to a Savannah itinerary without requiring much travel time.

Things To Know Before You Go
