Museum

The SCAD Museum of Art is one of Savannah’s most exciting cultural destinations, blending contemporary art with innovative architecture inside a beautifully restored nineteenth-century railroad warehouse. Operated by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), the museum features rotating exhibitions by internationally recognized artists alongside emerging creative talent from around the world.

Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply looking to experience another side of Savannah beyond its historic squares, the SCAD Museum of Art offers an inspiring and distinctly modern perspective within the city’s Historic District.

Why We Recommend It

The SCAD Museum of Art provides a refreshing contrast to Savannah’s historic attractions. While the city is celebrated for its architecture and history, the museum showcases Savannah’s thriving creative community and its reputation as one of America’s leading centers for art and design education.

We recommend it because every visit offers something different. Rotating exhibitions ensure there’s always something new to experience, making it worthwhile for both first-time visitors and returning guests.

History

The museum opened in 2011 following the adaptive reuse of the Central of Georgia Railway’s nineteenth-century headquarters. Rather than replacing the historic structure, SCAD preserved much of the original industrial architecture while incorporating modern gallery spaces and sustainable design.

Today, the museum serves as both a teaching resource for SCAD students and a nationally recognized contemporary art museum, presenting exhibitions by internationally acclaimed artists while supporting the next generation of creative professionals.

What We Like

The SCAD Museum of Art feels completely different from any other museum in Savannah. Clean architectural lines, thoughtfully curated exhibitions, and spacious galleries create an experience that’s both relaxing and inspiring.

We especially appreciate the balance between the historic building and contemporary artwork. It’s a reminder that Savannah continues to evolve creatively while honoring its architectural past.
