Telfair Museums is the oldest public art museum in the South and one of Savannah’s premier cultural attractions. Rather than a single museum, Telfair Museums consists of three remarkable properties: the historic Telfair Academy, the contemporary Jepson Center, and the Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. Together, they tell the story of Savannah through fine art, architecture, design, and history.

Whether you’re drawn to classical European paintings, modern American art, historic architecture, or interactive exhibitions, Telfair Museums offers something for every visitor. It’s an excellent way to experience Savannah beyond its famous squares while gaining a deeper appreciation for the city’s artistic and cultural heritage.

Why We Recommend It

Telfair Museums offers one of the most complete cultural experiences in Savannah. Instead of focusing on a single period or subject, visitors can explore nearly two centuries of art, architecture, and history across three unique locations.

We recommend purchasing admission that includes all three properties whenever possible. Together they provide an outstanding overview of Savannah’s evolution while allowing guests to experience everything from elegant nineteenth-century homes to contemporary art installations.

History

Telfair Museums traces its beginnings to 1886, when Mary Telfair bequeathed her family home to establish the first public art museum in the Southern United States. The original Telfair Academy opened shortly thereafter and remains one of Savannah’s most important cultural institutions.

Over time, the organization expanded to include the award-winning Jepson Center, dedicated to modern and contemporary art, along with the nationally significant Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. Together, these three museums preserve Savannah’s artistic, architectural, and social history while presenting world-class exhibitions throughout the year.

What We Like

Few museums offer such a diverse experience. Visitors can admire nineteenth-century architecture in the morning, enjoy contemporary exhibitions after lunch, and finish the day touring one of America’s most significant historic homes.

We also appreciate how walkable everything is. All three museum properties are located within or near Savannah’s Historic District, making it easy to incorporate them into a broader day of sightseeing.
