Savannah has plenty to offer tourists throughout the year. During the summer, the city hosts a number of food festivals and cultural events – another good reason to dapple in Savannah GA tourism this summer!
River Street Seafood Fest
One of the most popular Savannah GA tourism events is the River Street Seafood Fest. Located on the banks of the broad Savannah River, the town is known for its fresh fish and seafood. Restaurants combine the freshest seafood in their southern cuisine specialties making Savannah an attractive destination for foodies, especially during the seafood festival.
The River Street Seafood Fest takes place on the first weekend in May and centers on Rousakis Plaza. Many local restaurants provide stalls and pop-up restaurants to serve local shrimp, crawfish, crab, oysters and other delicious delights from the sea. There are plenty of arts and crafts booths to browse when the eating’s done, and live music and entertainment on the Arbor Stage adds to the mellow atmosphere.
Savannah Preservation Festival
The Savannah Preservation Festival is a three-day summer event during the second weekend in May each year. This celebration of Savannah’s exceptional architectural heritage includes lectures, panel discussions, speaker-led tours of some of Savannah’s signature buildings, a wine tour in some of the city’s finest privately owned homes and a preservation-themed trolley tour. It ends with a “Raise the roof” party to celebrate the past and future success of historic preservation in Savannah.
First Friday Fireworks
To celebrate the start of each new month, Savannah Waterfront Association puts on an evening of fireworks and fun. If you are visiting Savannah on the first weekend of any month, head down to the Rousakis Riverfront Plaza for the evening. The exceptions are the months of January and July when the fireworks take place on New Year’s Eve and July 4th.
The fireworks light up the sky above the scenic waterfront from 9.30pm, but you need to find a spot around 9pm to make sure you don’t miss anything.
Savannah Voice Festival
The Savannah Voice Festival celebrates music and culture through a range of performances and events focusing on the vocal arts. The summer festival runs for 17 days in August and is supported by other musical events throughout the year.
The Savannah Voice Festival is led by the well-known opera singer Sherrill Milnes and his wife, soprano Maria Zouves. The event brings together over 50 classically training singers who perform opera, musical theater and song in a collection of ticketed events. 2014 highlights include a recital by Jennifer Johnson and Christopher Cano; a performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni and a series of Luncheon Masterclasses led by Sherrill Milnes.
Another fantastic summer festival on the Rousakis Riverfront Plaza is Bacon Fest. The event is free to attend and includes entertainment and family fun. There will be a range of artist booths to browse and of course, select local restaurants will be offering creative ways to cook and serve bacon. Arrive hungry and follow the delicious aroma to find the location!
