The Georgia State Railroad Museum offers visitors a fascinating look at the golden age of American rail travel. Located within Savannah’s historic Central of Georgia Railway complex, the museum is one of the largest and most complete antebellum railroad preservation sites in the country.

Featuring beautifully restored steam locomotives, historic railcars, working turntables, blacksmith demonstrations, and interactive exhibits, the museum brings nineteenth-century transportation to life. Whether you’re a lifelong railroad enthusiast or simply looking for a unique family-friendly attraction, it’s one of Savannah’s most engaging historical experiences.

Why We Recommend It

The Georgia State Railroad Museum is one of Savannah’s most interactive museums. Rather than simply displaying artifacts behind glass, it allows visitors to experience the scale and craftsmanship of historic railroads through demonstrations, train rides, and working equipment.

Families especially appreciate the hands-on experiences, while history enthusiasts enjoy learning how railroads transformed Savannah into one of the South’s most important commercial cities. It’s an excellent destination that appeals to every generation.

History

Originally constructed in 1853, the Central of Georgia Railway complex served as one of the nation’s most advanced railroad maintenance facilities during the nineteenth century. The site played a critical role in transporting cotton, timber, passengers, and supplies throughout Georgia and beyond.

Today, the preserved roundhouse, repair shops, locomotives, and railcars make up the Georgia State Railroad Museum, operated by the Coastal Heritage Society. It remains one of the most complete surviving railroad complexes in North America and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.

What We Like

This museum feels alive. Visitors can watch locomotives being rotated on the massive turntable, speak with knowledgeable interpreters, explore historic passenger cars, and often ride a vintage train around the property.

We also appreciate how immersive the experience is. Instead of simply reading about railroad history, guests walk through authentic workshops and maintenance buildings that have remained remarkably intact for more than 170 years.
